There are several ways to get from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to your destination in Kathmandu, depending on your budget and preferences.
✔️ If your hotel offers airport pickup, this is the most hassle-free and safest option, especially for first-time visitors and families with young children.
✔️ Many mid-range and high-end hotels provide this service either for free or at a reasonable charge.
✔️ Prepaid taxis are available inside the airport, but they tend to be expensive.
✔️ Regular taxis can be found outside the terminal, and you should negotiate the fare before getting in. A fair price for a ride to Thamel or central Kathmandu is Rs 800-1000 ($6-8).
✔️ Pathao and inDrive are popular apps for booking taxis at a lower price than airport taxis.
✔️ To use these apps, you will need an active SIM card with data (available at the airport but may take time to activate).
✔️ If using Pathao, try the "Choose on Map" feature to accurately set your destination.
✔️ If you're comfortable, you can walk 5-10 minutes outside the airport to the main road and catch a local taxi at a lower rate (Rs 500-600 for Thamel).
✔️ Many travelers heading to Thamel share taxis to split costs. If you meet fellow passengers, you can negotiate a shared fare.
✔️ The airport remains open, and you can still get visa on arrival and currency exchange.
✔️ Ride-hailing apps may have fewer cars available, so airport taxis or prearranged hotel pickups are the best options at night.
✔️ SIM card counters may be closed, so you might need to wait until the next morning to get one in Thamel.
For a smooth experience, it's best to arrange airport pickup in advance or use a ride-hailing app for cost savings.
